Feeling a Little Fussy

Taken this morning, when this little cutie was supposed to be napping.  She obviously is not.

Not for lack of trying on my part, I assure you.  Bless her little heart (and mine as well), but this girl has gotten fussy!  I think that it's reflux, as after she eats is a problem time, but Lord only knows!  We go to the pediatrician tomorrow on Dell Harper's 4 week(!) birthday, so hopefully he will have some answers.

I'm actually hoping it's reflux, as opposed to the vague label of colic.  I'm a goal oriented person!  I need to be able to fix my little one when she is suffering, but am learning the foibles of motherhood quite quickly.

So if any of y'all have advice for reflux, please throw it on me!  She is sleeping upright now, in her nap nanny, or a rocking little bed thing, which has helped.  Next step is to elevate the crib- poor thing just arches her back, wheezes, and lets loose with an ear piercing wail.  I have confused myself thoroughly by consuming way too much information- now am consumed with doubt when I let her cry herself to sleep, or when I pick her up and let her hang on my shoulder.  This combined with a lack of sleep and lingering hormones means that I am taking a break from baby books! (Damn you Kindle and ability to order stuff at three o'clock in the morning while nursing).

So excuse once again my radio silence as I muddle through my baby's crying spells- any advice is appreciated!

  1. I can't remember if you have said whether or not you're nursing, but my sister had this problem when she was nursing my niece. It ended up the baby (and mama) were allergic to dairy products, so she had to completely quit all milk, cheese, etc (except for goat cheese and other animal cheeses). As soon as it all got out of her system, everything was great!

And now that she's been through that I've heard of that happening quite often. Good luck!

  2. I think colic is a label used when we don't know what is causing fussing. If your doctor does mentioned colic there is a great homeopathic product called Colic Calm that I used and it worked wonders.

But, I truly think sometimes babies need to just be comforted. There is no harm in just snuggling a baby that little. It will only help her to feel loved and secure in my opinion.

  3. As a momma that went through the exact same thing about 11 months ago, I second the comment on Dairy! Quit all dairy products, and even soy products. You will have to do a lot of reading labels because soy and dairy are in a lot of foods. It will take about 2-3 weeks before you see any improvement, so hang on! It does sound like reflux, so hopefully she will be prescribed some medicine like zantac, axid, or prevacid, but they will also likely prescribe you the dairy free diet as well. Those two things go hand in hand and the milk allergy can actually CAUSE the reflux. Have them test your baby's stool for the milk protein allergy if you want to know for sure whether or not you need to quit dairy products. They stick a little test strip in it that changes color if blood is present in stool (you may not be able to see the blood but it can still be present). If your baby is extra special like mine, I had to stop nursing all together because there is a small percentage of babies that are allergic to even dairy free breast milk. We had to go on a special prescription formula.

  4. Samma, you are totally in spirit in my Girl Power post today!

My sister's second kiddo had a terrible time with reflux - so much so that he was on some major meds, which thankfully he's past. I'd be happy to hook you guys up for an info exchange! Bottom line was that my sis had to pretty drastically change her diet - bland was the word. But I'm hoping you don't have to go down that road!

  6. I remember driving our son around too. Something about the car is soothing, I guess. Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl!!

  7. Wish I could go "poof" and make it all better, but my advice is to hang in there! My Moosh cried a ton and we never did figure out what it was, but I've decided she just had loads of personality and needed to be heard. Not great advice for when you're in the thick of it, but trust me time makes it all better. I promise!
