A different type of wedding garb

One of my dear friends from law school, Juhi, is getting married in August. This is extra exciting, as it will be the first Indian wedding I have ever attended (mine was Juhi's fist American style wedding).

The gorgeous husband and wife to be-

Here's the best part- SARIS!  Shelley and I have been plotting our matching saris since Juhi and Vivek started dating, and now we finally get to don these gorgeous duds.  Juhi recently returned from India, where she picked up these beauties- red for me, and fuchsia for Shelley.  I'm a little nervous about midriff exposure, but apparently my tummy will be covered?  Any of those with sari experience out there?

I loved hearing about what everyone is reading, and will come back with the winners Wednesday.

Thanks so much Juhi for the amazing sari! I am so excited to wear mine.

  1. SO JEALOUS! My parents lived in India for a little bit after being married (they were mega-hippies and lived in an ashram with a guru... its very surreal to ponder now) and I used to LOVE to play dress up in the saris she brought back with her! One of Evs' groomsmen is Indian and I keep waiting for him to get married so I can bust one out!

  6. Ooh, I'm so jealous!! I adore the traditional Indian wedding colors and traditions - you are going to have a blast!

Back in ABQ a friend of mine actually had a sari PARTY one night. I can't remember how it got started - maybe someone bought a box of saris at a garage sale or something random like that? - and a month later, 200 people were at her sprawling place wearing saris and other amazing things and Indian music videos were being screened against the side of the house. I remember one of my guy friends looking around at the women and seeing he'd never seen anything sexier than all that fabric and small glimpses of bare skin. Just such a great night.

(Sidenote: I believe this anecdote shall serve as evidence as to why it was so difficult to leave the beautifully-wacky-random-free experience of living in New Mexico for as long as I did.)

  11. Absolutely beautiful! My younger sister recently went to India for a medical conference and returned with some of the most beautiful silk saris I had ever seen - you'll have such a good time wearing your red sari at the wedding!
