Daddy Sang Bass, Mama sang Tenor

My parents seemingly have nothing in common- Daddy is a car dealer with a business mind.  Mama is a potter who sometimes I believe still has no idea what I do as a transactional attorney.  She was an anthropology major where she fell in love with ceramics, while his analytical brain studied engineering.

Mama is tight as a tick, while Daddy is a bit, ahem, more generous in his spending.  Mama is more of a country girl, growing up riding her horse to school on report card day.  Daddy, although born in East Tennessee, to East Tennesseans, grew up in Pittsburgh.  He is a bit more likely to turn up his nose at a dinner of beans, greens, and cornbread (although I think this has changed after thirty years with Mama).

Anyway, one thing they enjoy together is books and reading.  Our home is overflowing with reading material- books and magazines line the wall, and reside in stacks in corners and nooks.  Much to Hubs' dismay, our cosy little condo is rapidly becoming subject to the same fate.  I read, to put it mildly, a lot, and I love to be surrounded by books. So the Happy Prize for today is. . .BOOKS!

Two of my recent favorites- Bound South by Susan Rebbecca White, which is set in Atlanta.  I read this last summer around the time I read "The Help".  I recommend this to any fans of that book.

Book number two is a psychological thriller set in Cape Cod, "Tainted", by Brooke Morgan. I devoured this book, which kept me up all night.

So please enter by commenting which book you would like to win, and what is currently on your nightstand.  I'm always looking for fun recommendations!

  2. Oh my gosh, I LOVE to read!! I read maybe 2-3 books a month (which sometimes drives Husband nuts!) Both of these are on my reading list, so I'm happy with either.
Suggestions - hmmmm...I loved the Friday Night Knitting Club. I really enjoyed Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'Easter, I couldn't put that one down, a keeper for me. I'm currently reading The Help, and am loving it. Too bad you missed my book swap! :-)

  5. Both sound really interesting, but "Tainted" sounds particularly cool.

I'm currently reading "Stitch and Bitch" and "Knitting for Dummies", as I'm on a quest to knit a scarf this week, and "Mistress Shakespeare", a downright excoriable fictionalization of Shakespeare's alleged secret wife. Can't wait to finish that one.

    Are you on GoodReads?

  6. I want to Bound South! I was reminiscing the other day about when I was little and momma and daddy would go on trips. Most kids got toys but we always received books. It was so exciting to see what adventure they were bringing us in those pages. Currently on my nightstand is Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom. I also have The Help in my stack.

  12. I would love to win either book. If I need to pick, then I will say Tainted. :) I love to read too -- usually a book a week. It's a nice break from legal work, that's for sure. I just finished The Welsh Girl, which was good. My recent favorites have been The Secret Life of Bees; The Help; America, America; We Need to Talk About Kevin. I read American Wife last month, but I was a little disappointed. Oh, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was good too. Take care, and have a good Friday.

  19. Hey girl! Well, since I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED "The Help" and gave it to several of my girlfriends for Christmas gifts I think that I'll take your recommendation and choose "Bound South" if I could pick one to win! Right now, I am reading a book that I think that you'd love. It's called "Dixieland Delight" it is by Clay Travis and his story as he travels his way through the south during football season attending a home game at EVERY SEC team! The other book I am reading is more of a bible study "Lady in Waiting: Becoming God's Best While Waiting for Mister Right". I am single these days and using this book for inspiration :)

  32. I'm currently reading The Help so I guess I would have to say Bound South. I'm a bookworm as well and I'm trying to take advantage of my library this year to help out with the overflowing book situation.

  34. Love seeing what others are reading and it some good adds to my already long list.

Weirdly enough I'm currently straddling 2 books : Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert (who wrote Eat, Pray, Love) + The Ominvore's Dilema by Michael Pollan. So far they're both very fascinating in very different ways!

ps: loved the pics of your mom & dad!

  35. "Bound South" for this TN girl!
I am currently reading "My Life in France" by the one and only Julia Child. It makes me want to buy out Williams Sonoma...but do you really need a book to feel that way??

  36. I forgot to say that I thought The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was slow at first but then it really picked up. I am trying to resist buying the 2nd one in the series. (I want to wait for it to come out in paperback.) Based on your suggestion, I picked up Bound South this weekend. It was really good. I enjoyed it. I liked all the narrators. Thanks for the recommendation.
