BUT, WAIT, there are no books. Nothing to read at all. There are a few that look like the interior designer bought them by the yard. An anathema to this reader. Shudder.
Now, I understand that some people don't read. Hell, a lot of my nearest and dearest are not readers. I get it. Well, not really, but I pretend to. But why, if you don't own books, would you have a library in your home?
On the other hand, I am dying to scan these shelves.
I am my mother's daughter, but I firmly agree with her belief that real art and books make a home. I love my kindle, but miss the books- rereading, loaning, etc. Hubs says I have enough books cluttering up the house as it is! I think he would prefer me to "style" our bookshelves with knick knacks. In fact, he mentioned his football helmet from high school would be an excellent addition.
(Not Hubs. Just a random picture of his high school playing their top rival.)
Hmmm. I think I will stick with the books for now.
I'm the same way! I don't have room for crap on my bookshelves, because they're completely filled with...wait for it...BOOKS! Imagine that! I've actually had to purchase more and more bookcases to house the books, which are stored all over our house. I have books in closets and books in kitchen cabinets, much to my husband's dismay because we sure could use some more room for actual kitchen objects in there. Ugh. I think I have a problem.
ReplyDeleteWas your hubs a Christ School greenie? We live in Asheville and have lots of friends with children at the Asheville School. I guess we're on the wrong side of your rivalry!
ReplyDeleteI felt the SAME way, I wanted a library in our house, but then that changed. I started to realize I never reread my books and they aren't really gong to be passed down to our kids (Oprah and Target book clubs do not scream "Classics") so now I give away to Goodwill and the library after my friends and family get 1st dibs. Maybe if publishers would start using leather bound jackets again I'd keep, but I doubt that will happen!!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. I love to incorporate in happy collections in bookshelves but the stars are the books! I remember one of my first book shelf projects in which they had no books...I was baffled. And had to go to goodwill to buy some to fill their cases. My snarky self bought some crazy ones to put in there to highlight their lack of book collection. I love to see what people have on heir shelves!
ReplyDeleteMy parents had bookshelves built in to the living room of my childhood home. They put doors on the bottom quarter and THAT is where they store stuff - not "styled" on the shelves. The shelves currently in my home are Ikea but hey - they're filled with books! We do have picture frames as well as a sculpture that belonged to JM's grandfather but 85 - 90% of it is currently books. Oh, and we have another FULLY filled bookshelf in our bedroom :)
ReplyDeleteI love books on book shelves, of course, but I still would need it to be "styled" a bit. Either by color or with the addition of some other items...like statues and framed photos. I lean to the book side though! Only hardcovers :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading the titles on other people's bookshelves -- the perfect conversation starter!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of bookshelves busting with lots of old and some new books.. love your photos!
