This is How We Do It (in the mountains)

Oh, y'all this was one of those fall weekends that define your memory of fall.  Clear blue sky, crisp air, and a backdrop of orange, gold, and red.  And a full harvest moon. And the possibility of a big, red, furry dog (more on that later).

And moonshine.

A few of those cherries, and my cold that I've been battling all week had magically disappeared! Temporarily at least.  If it was good enough for my grandparents, and their parents, well, it's good enough for me.  Obviously, moonshine has a very strong presence in the East Tennessee area.  Hubs and I  received some as a wedding present in fact.

Hubs approved.

We attended a fundraiser Harvest Moonshine Party for Knoxville's oldest home- where the Tennessee constitution was signed, and great amounts of moonshine was consumed.  We're nothing but historically accurate.

And ba da dum, we got to go see a dog!  If you have been reading for a whole, you know that I have been positively aching for a buddy.  We met with a potential new member of the family, and I am over the moon!  Fingers crossed!  We are meeting one more of golden retriever rescue's pups this week.  Deep breathing and patience have been my go-to tactics to not scream and dance around every five seconds.  "I'M GETTING A DOG!!"

Has anyone adopted a dog from a rescue organization?  Give me the scoop- good or bad!

Oh, and if y'all have any moonshine stories I'd love to hear them- I could tell quite a few, but don't want to get myself in hot water!!

  1. We rescued our 5 year old beagle mix from a rescue facility. He is the light of our lives. It took us a month or so to get his stomach sorted out (food allergies, worms, then some of the medicine upset his stomach, etc.) but other than that we haven't had any problems. He really is our best bud.

  2. I am a big fan of adopting from rescue groups! I prefer groups over other shelters because the dogs are (most of the time) kept in foster homes which I think gives the dogs really good practice living with rules and people.

I adopted from a Rottie Mix from a rescue group then have fostered 2 dogs as well. Good luck!

  3. My parents rescued a Golden from the Central FL rescue this summer and he is AMAZING. The most well behaved, well trained, loving dog ever.

  4. Definitely adopt! My old dog was the best dog on the planet, and he was from a rescue group. This red guy is just too cute! I love big 'ol dogs.

  5. Ha, you know my family was moonshiners back in the day!

Both my pups are rescue dogs and I couldn't love them more. They are the BEST. Rescue dogs just have a different kind of love--it's like they know what they didn't have and love you so much more for helping them. Our beagle must always know where we are at all times. It's hilarious. And unconditional love. Which you get from all dogs, of course, but, I don't know, I just love rescue dogs.

  6. My bro adopted a black lab/hound mix from the lab rescue in Knox. Bud was so sweet and amazing! They had to work with him a little bit because he was a puppy (about 8 or 9 months) and had been abused so he was scared of guys at first. He quickly grew very attached to my bro. He used to come cuddle on the couch with me but always wanted to be in my lap but he was 90 lbs ha!

  8. sO #1, you look absolutely gorgeous that picture!

#2, I went to that Moonshine distillery when I was up in TN over Labor Day weekend. & of course it was a Sunday when I went to the tasting so I couldn't take any home with me! But that stuff is fantastic! The apple cider flavor is DA BOMB.

#3, i rescued my houndy from a hound rescue and she came full of problemos, but we got all of the straightened out-- so now i know why they call them "rescues".

But good luck. Goldens are wonderful doggies :)

  9. Our Lab came from North Texas Lab Rescue and is a great dog! The vet discovered heartworm right after adoption, but the organization payed for the treatments and even asked if myhusband wanted to keep him. They were willing to take him back, but there was no need.

I say definitely rescue a dog; I think they always know they were rescued and love you even more.

  15. We got our Phoebe from DFW Lab Rescue and she is awesome. She was about 1 1/2 years old when we brought her home and she had been outdoors her entire life. Her fosters had been working with her on potty training and we had two accidents and that was it. She is my baby. Rescue is the way to go.

  18. My pup is a rescue dog!

We got her from a rescue group in Richmond, VA that a friend of mine works for and she is THE best dog on the planet. SO sweet and mellow and laid back. I couldn't be happier. We got her at about 6-7 months. She had been in foster homes for a month and was already house broken and crate trained. It was a new dog owner's dream come true.

If we got another dog, I'd most likely do the rescue thing again.

I can't wait to see what you get! I've never rescued a pup, but my mom and sis both have and had the BEST experiences. Good luck!
